The description for the ornament will say which weapon it goes too. They're permanent, once equipped they can be safely unequipped.
Similar to how Solstice armor has worked in the past, the new Universal Ornament will cause any armor that it is worn on to glow with the element of the subclass the player has equipped, including a fourth color when Beyond Light brings Stasis to Destiny 2. Returning in Destiny 2, Weapon Ornaments can again be purchased through Eververse, earned through quests, or can be obtained by decrypting Bright Engrams. In Destiny 2, ornaments are a way to make any piece of armor look exactly how you want it. You will see a new one in this subscreen Appearance customization options It is in the upper right.
